Linen
Spun from flax. Its fibres are hollow, which allows air to move through the cloth and moisture to evaporate quickly — the reason linen feels cool even at high temperatures.
It creases, and it will always crease. This is a property of the fibre, not a fault in the garment, and attempting to eliminate it usually means the linen has been blended or resin-treated at the cost of breathability. Linen also softens considerably with washing, so a stiff new piece is not a permanent state.
Best for: dry heat, daytime, anyone who accepts creasing as part of the character.
Cotton
Absorbent, breathable, and stable enough to carry embroidery without distortion. Less cooling than linen because the fibre is solid rather than hollow, but far more forgiving — it creases less, washes easily, and holds structure in a cut.

Cupro

Because it is cellulose rather than protein, it is breathable and washable in a way silk is not. It creases less than linen and moves more than cotton.

Lyocell-ramie
Lyocell is cellulose produced in a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses its solvent. Ramie is a bast fibre, related to nettle, that is strong and naturally crease-resistant.
Blended, they produce a cloth that breathes like linen but recovers from folding — the practical answer to linen's one weakness. It also holds colour well and resists stretching at stress points.
Best for: travel, long wear, anyone who wants natural fibre without the crease.

What about synthetics
Polyester and its relatives do not absorb moisture. In heat this means perspiration sits against the skin rather than evaporating, which is why synthetic garments feel hotter and retain odour. They crease less and cost less. For warm weather, that is the whole of the trade.
Choosing by climate rather than by season
Dry heat rewards linen, because evaporation is rapid and the cooling effect is strongest. Humid heat rewards cotton and cupro, because moisture must be absorbed rather than evaporated. Air-conditioned interiors reward heavier weaves and layering, since the real problem is the temperature change rather than the heat itself.
