2. Under a blazer — for meetings
A solid, unpatterned blazer over an embroidered shirt is the single most effective way to make hand embroidery work in a conservative environment. The jacket frames a narrow vertical panel of embroidery at the front and covers the rest.
Choose a blazer in a colour drawn from the embroidery itself rather than a contrast. Leave it open.
3. With straight-leg denim — weekend
Indigo or ecru denim, straight or slightly relaxed. Shirt worn loose or front-tucked. Flat sandal, loafer or clean sneaker.
The key is denim without distressing or heavy hardware. Plain, dark, well-cut denim behaves like a neutral.
4. Belted as a dress
Longer embroidered shirts and shirt dresses take a belt at the natural waist beautifully. A plain leather belt in a colour picked from the embroidery, bare legs or opaque tights.
This is the fastest transition from day to evening — one accessory changes the entire silhouette.
5. Over slim trousers, worn open
Treat the shirt as a light jacket. Open over a plain vest or fine-knit top, with slim or tapered trousers underneath.
This works particularly well when the embroidery runs down the front placket, because leaving it open displays the full vertical line of the work.
6. With a long skirt — evening
A plain column skirt in silk, satin or heavy crepe, in a tone drawn from the embroidery. Shirt tucked. Minimal jewellery — a single earring or nothing.
Tonal rather than contrasting is what makes this read as expensive.
7. Layered under knitwear
A fine-gauge sweater or sleeveless knit over the shirt, with the embroidered collar and cuffs showing. Autumn's most useful trick, and it lets a summer shirt work in October.
Choose a knit with a wide or open neckline so the collar reads clearly.
8. With linen, for travel
Embroidered shirt, linen wide-leg trousers, flat sandal. Breathable, unstructured, and it survives a long flight without looking like it did.
Linen and hand embroidery share a texture language — both are visibly made rather than manufactured.
What to avoid
- Another pattern anywhere. The single most common mistake.
- Heavy layered jewellery. The neckline already has ornament.
- Overly casual bottoms — leggings, distressed denim, sportswear. They flatten hours of hand-work into something incidental.
- Matching your shoe to the embroidery. Too literal. Pull the colour into a bag or belt instead.
