Hand embroidery survives decades if you do four things: never machine wash it, never wring it, always press from the reverse over a soft surface, and store it flat or rolled rather than on a hanger. The threads and beadwork are attached to the base cloth by hand, and almost all damage comes from mechanical agitation and prolonged tension — not from age.
How should you wash a hand-embroidered garment?
First choice: don't. Spot-clean and air the garment instead. Most occasion wear is worn for a few hours indoors and needs freshening rather than washing. Airing overnight on a padded hanger removes most odour.
When it does need cleaning: take silk, tissue and heavily beaded pieces to a dry cleaner, and tell them explicitly that the embroidery is hand-worked. A good cleaner will hand-finish rather than press flat.
If hand washing lightly embroidered cotton or lawn:
- Cold water only. Heat causes dye bleed and thread shrinkage at different rates from the base cloth, which puckers the embroidery permanently.
- A pH-neutral detergent. No enzymes, no bleach, no optical brighteners.
- Submerge and press gently. No rubbing, no twisting, no agitation across embroidered areas.
- Rinse in cold water until it runs clear.
- Press water out between towels. Never wring. Wringing snaps embroidery threads at the anchor points, and that damage cannot be repaired invisibly.
How should you dry it?
Flat, in shade, on a clean towel. Reshape while damp.
Never hang a wet embroidered garment. Water weight plus gravity pulls the embroidery out of shape at the shoulders, and heavy beadwork can tear its own stitching. Never tumble dry. Never dry in direct sun — UV fades silk thread far faster than cotton.
How do you press embroidered fabric?
Turn the garment inside out. Lay it face-down on a folded towel so the embroidery sits into the padding rather than being crushed. Press from the reverse, on the appropriate heat setting for the base fabric, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the cloth.
Never iron directly onto embroidery, sequins, mirror work or metallic thread. Sequins melt, metallic thread flattens and loses its light, and mirror work can crack.
For creases in tissue silk, steam from a distance rather than pressing — tissue is meant to have some texture.
How should you store occasion wear long-term?
This is where most damage actually happens — not in wearing, and not in washing.
Do:
- Store heavy pieces flat in a box, or rolled around an acid-free tube.
- Interleave folds with acid-free tissue to prevent hard creases.
- Use breathable cotton or muslin garment bags.
- Keep somewhere dark, dry and cool.
Don't:
- Hang heavy embroidered garments for long periods. The weight distorts the shoulders over months, and the distortion is permanent.
- Use plastic dry-cleaning bags for storage. They trap moisture and off-gas, which yellows silk.
- Store in cedar or with mothballs in direct contact — the oils stain.
- Store a garment unwashed. Invisible sugar and perspiration residue attracts insects and oxidises into brown marks over time.
What if a thread comes loose?
Stop wearing it and do not pull the thread. On hand embroidery, a loose thread is usually one stitch that has worked free, and it can be re-anchored invisibly if caught early. Pulling it unravels a run.
A tailor or specialist embroiderer can secure it. Contact the brand first — many ateliers repair their own work.
Does hand embroidery last longer than machine embroidery?
Generally yes, when cared for. Hand embroidery is anchored stitch by stitch, so damage stays local — one broken stitch does not release the rest. Machine embroidery runs continuous thread paths, so a break can unravel further.
Hand embroidery also sits lighter on the cloth, which puts less long-term stress on the base fabric.

Can I steam an embroidered dress? Yes, from a distance, with the garment hanging and the steamer held away from beadwork. Safer than ironing for most occasion wear.
How often should occasion wear be cleaned? Only when actually soiled. Over-cleaning does more cumulative damage than wearing.
How long should hand-embroidered clothing last? Properly stored, decades. Heirloom South Asian formals are routinely passed down two or three generations.
