Appliqué attaches one fabric on top of another. Embroidery builds a design from thread alone. In hand-cut appliqué each shape is scissor-cut from cloth, positioned by hand, and stitched down along its edge — so the design has the body and colour of real fabric rather than the flatness of thread.
How it is made
The sequence is unchanged for centuries. A motif is drawn, then transferred to the fabric to be cut. Each shape is cut individually with scissors — not stamped or die-cut, because a die cannot follow a hand-drawn curve without flattening it. The cut shapes are laid onto the ground cloth and positioned by eye. Each is then stitched down along its full edge, with the raw edge turned under or secured with a covering stitch so it cannot fray.
A single garment may carry several hundred individually cut pieces. Every one is cut, placed and stitched by a person.
Why it looks different from embroidery
Thread embroidery builds colour by laying many strands side by side. Up close you see direction and sheen. Appliqué introduces a whole plane of fabric, so colour arrives as a flat field with its own weave, weight and light behaviour.
The practical result is contrast. A single garment can carry the crispness of a cut edge against the softness of a thread outline. That layering — fabric on fabric, then thread over both — is what gives hand-appliqué work its depth.
What cutwork adds
Cutwork is the inverse operation: fabric is removed rather than added. Sections are cut away and the resulting edges secured, leaving open negative space in the design.
Used together — appliqué building up, cutwork cutting away — they create a surface that reads differently depending on what is behind it. Against skin, against a slip, against light, the same panel changes.
Why cotton silk chanderi suits it
Chanderi is woven from a silk warp and a cotton weft. That combination gives it two properties appliqué requires: enough body to hold a cut shape without collapsing, and enough fineness that layered fabric does not become bulky.
A heavier cloth would make multi-layer appliqué stiff. A softer one would let cut edges curl. Chanderi holds the middle, which is why it has been used for this work for generations.
How a kaftan or A-line should fit
Neither garment is meant to be fitted, but neither should be shapeless.
- The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder or slightly beyond. Further in and the whole garment drags.
- The widest point should clear your hip by a few inches, not cling to it.
- Length matters more than width. Full length elongates; anything ending at mid-calf shortens the line.
- The neckline carries the structure. A defined neckline — a plunging yoke, a slit, a placket — gives a loose garment its shape.
The common error is buying loose garments too large. Volume is designed into the cut; adding more reads as ill-fitting rather than relaxed.
Care
Appliqué edges are the vulnerable point. Wash by hand in cool water or have the piece dry cleaned. Do not wring — press water out between towels. Dry flat, since hanging pulls on the stitched edges. Iron on the reverse so the iron never sits directly on a cut edge.
Common questions
Is appliqué less valuable than embroidery? No. A densely appliquéd panel can take longer than a thread-embroidered one, because each shape must be cut, positioned and secured individually.
Will the edges fray? Not if properly finished. Edges are turned or covered during construction. Fraying indicates the piece was made quickly.
Why do two pieces of the same design differ? Because every shape is cut and placed by hand. Two garments from the same drawing will never be identical, and are not intended to be.
